INTRACYTOPLASMIC SPERM INJECTION (ICSI)

ICSI involves injection of single sperm, taken from washed & prepared semen of husband, or obtained surgicaly from husbands epididymis or testes,in to each egg using glass pipette on micromanipulator. With this technique, the chances of fertilization are very high. Rest of the procedure is very simialr to what happens in IVF.

ICSI is recommended in cases where males have either very poor count, very poor motility or highly defective sperms. For cases of azoospermia i.e. no sperms in semen, sperms can be obtained from epididymis or testes. This is an opportunity for couples to have their own biological offspring thus avoiding using donor's sperms from the semen bank.

ICSI can also help in cases where women have low egg production (eg older women) and patients having repeated IVF failures.
